Dolphins Down Under: Understanding the New Zealand Dolphin

Author(s): Liz Slooten & Steve Dawson

NZ Non-Fiction

Also known as Hector's dolphin, the NZ dolphin is a fascinating and beautiful animal, found only in our waters. The authors have devoted more than a dolphin lifespan to intensive study of its distribution, behaviour, biology, reproduction and communication, using photography as their principal research tool. This book introduces the dolphin to readers of all ages. Over 100 individual dolphins have been identified and their life events recorded. Early on in their research the authors realised that dolphin numbers are not sustainable under current fishing pratices. They describe these and other conservation problems as well as their solutions - both potential and existing - encouraging the reader to appreciate the fragility of the dolphins' existence.
