Julie in New Zealand, Lang Ling in China records the memoirs of two professional working women. Julie, a consultant social anthropologist, met Lang Ling, a university lecturer in economics, while working together in northern China.

The opening up of China and work agreements between New Zealand and China made their meeting possible. Julie and Lang Ling, of similar age, recall the influences on their lives through childhood in the post World War II era, family, education, community, marriage and work life. Their backgrounds and upbringing are hugely different, yet there is a similarity in work and relationships between the authors.

Author description

JULIE MEADE ROSE, BA HONS, MA, is a social anthropologist and advisor in social impact assessment. She is the director of Social & Environmental Limited. Julie has worked for more than 30 years in New Zealand and overseas in 17 countries, in social impact assessment and social planning. Julie is married and lives with her husband Graham in Otorohanga, Waikato, New Zealand. They have two daughters and two grand-daughters.

WANG LANG LING, MSSc, is an applied economist. She is professor and head of the economics and business department at Heilongjiang Dongfang College in China. After the Cultural Revolution and study in England, Lang Ling took up teaching positions and professorships at universities in Harbin. Lang Ling is married and lives with her husband Qing Lin in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China. They have one daughter living in England.
