Since then, Allende has written 20 more books, including Of Love and Shadows, Eva Luna, and Portrait in Sepia.

* Deemed "the world's most widely read Spanish-language author" (Latin American Herald Tribune), Allende was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2004. Among numerous other awards, she received Chile's National Literature Prize and was named to the Council of Cervantes Institute. Allende is also a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which President Obama awarded to her in 2014.
