Catcall

Author(s): Linda Newbery

Children's Fiction

It's a time of change for Josh. He has a relatively new stepdad and a brand new baby sister. But for Josh's younger brother, Jamie, the family upheaval has deeply disturbing consequences: he refuses to speak, and after a vivid, frightening dream develops an obsession with wild cats. With his parents so preoccupied, it's up to Josh - who's always been the quiet one - to keep the family together and find a cure for his brother's strange behaviour. And in helping Jamie to recover his voice, Josh discovers an unexpectedly resonant one of his own. CATCALL is a tense, gripping and atmospheric novel, full of powerful ideas, and blending deep psychological tension with fast-paced action - highly-acclaimed author Linda Newbery at her most compelling and insightful.

Product Information

Linda Newbery won the 2006 Costa Children's Book Award (formerly the Whitbread Award), and has been shortlisted for both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. Her reputation increases with each new book - CATCALL received unanimously positive reviews on hardback publication. Page-turning stand-alone title for the 9 plus age group, which is often neglected in favour of series fiction and 'crossover' novels. Perceptive, insightful writing combined with tension and a dramatic storyline relevant to families everywhere. Linda's first Orion title, AT THE FIREFLY GATE, reprinted before publication and was an Ottakar's Book of the Month.

Winner of Nestle Children's Book Prize: Age 9-11 (Silver) 2007.

Linda Newbery always wanted to be a writer, but only began submitting work to publishers when she became a secondary school teacher. She now writes full-time from her home in a Northamptonshire village, which she shares with her husband and their cats. Much in demand as a speaker at conferences and in schools, she travels widely. Since 1988, Linda has published over thirty highly-acclaimed books for readers of all ages. Her latest novel, NEVERMORE, is published by Orion in October 2007.
