James Courage was the pioneer of New Zealand gay fiction. Born in Canterbury in 1903, the expatriate novelist and playwright was unusually open about his homosexuality during his lifetime. New Country brings together seven of Courage's virtually unknown stories and plays, and Christopher Burke's introduction explores their homoerotic themes, both overt and coded. This enchanting collection introduces some of Courage's most evocative work to a twenty-first century audience.

James Francis Courage was born in Canterbury in 1903. He studied at Christ's College before leaving for Oxford; with the exception of one trip back to New Zealand in 1933 he would live the rest of his life in England. He published a total of eight novels, numerous short stories and several plays. Courage died in England in 1963.
