On the Edge

Author(s): Linley Jones

Brady's life isn't easy. At twelve years of age he has a fear of heights and is a victim of bullying. Even life at home isn't good. He is a gifted musician but his flute is trashed. The only bright spot is his friendship with an elderly Russian, a survivor of the Siege of Leningrad, who offers him the use of a golden flute. He is put to the test on a family sailing trip and finally faces and oversomes extreme challenges (including foiling crime). His problems don't go away but he learns to handle responsibility - and life.

‘Action, adventure and authenticity, this book has it all. Whether Brady is facing challenges at school or home, playing music, out sailing or involved in a daring rescue, Linley Jones writes so convincingly the reader identifies with the characters and feels involved in every situation. Highly recommended reading for both boys and girls.’ - Jennifer Beck, renowned New Zealand children’s author ‘I liked that it was a New Zealand story at an intermediate school. I thought the characters were very real, and I could relate to them. I liked the part where they had to save Stan from the mountain, and I saw the way lots of different kids become Brady’s friends at the end.’ - Claire Samuel
