The Human Condition : Contemplation and Transformation by Thomas Keating

$25.00 NZD

Available Stock:
3

Category: Religion

This is a reflection on contemplative prayer, the search for happiness, and our need to explore the inner world. The search for God, Keating says, is also the search for ourselves, but our self-consciousness gets in the way. He takes the unique angle of the contemplative journey as "divine therapy" for the illness of the human condition, a method for opening up to our own wounded unconscious. As we move into a global culture, he says, this process of letting go of attachments and of self-centeredness is more important than ever. A work of beauty and clarity, The Human Condition - - draws from a wide range of classic and modern spiritual sources, as well as from solid common sense - explains how God is the only true security and how divine love is the full affirmation of who we are - shows how even a life of action needs contemplation and the practice of the presence of God ...Show more

Work and Worship: Religious Diversity in Workplaces in New Zealand by Dr. Edwina Pio

$33.00 NZD

Available Stock:
0

Category: Diversity

The book investigates religious diversity and suggests how business leaders can script success in their policies and practices by taking into account the growing workforce of minority religions in their organisations. Five diversity megatrends are discussed: Increasing global mobility and growth of 'no n-traditional' migrants in Western countries based on changing demographic patterns; Religious growth with multiple religions, including minority religions diffusing historically religious monopolies; Changing corridors of commerce such as BRICS, Asia Pacific and halal billion dollar markets; Human Rights and the fusion of sacred and secular with accommodation and good faith - a more pressing requirement in organisations; and the whole self at work or 24/7 lives. While diversity has always been part of the mix of Aotearoa New Zealand, until recently it could be discounted as it affected only a few. Now there is a blurring of boundaries between the secular and sacred for many individuals, or people of the diaspora who belong to faith traditions such as Hinduism, Islam, Indian Christianity, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism. The findings clearly indicate the need to develop a more sophisticated understanding of religious diversity in the workplace, in particular a world of cooperation, good faith and respect where organisations craft and implement policies and practices acknowledging the porosity between the sacred and secular. The careful and comprehensive research analysis within Work and Worship documents how business leadership within New Zealand welcomes the growing community of minority religions to their working organizations. ...Show more

The Book of Atheist Spirituality by Andre Comte-Sponville

$30.00 NZD

Available Stock:

Category: Religion

Can we do without religion? Can we have ethics without God? Is there such thing as 'atheistic spirituality'? In this powerful book, the internationally bestselling author Andr Comte-Sponville presents a philosophical exploration of atheism - and reaches startling conclusions. Atheists, Comte-Sponville argues, are no less interested in a spiritual life than religious believers. But by allowing the concept of spirituality to become intertwined with religion and dogma, humanity has lost touch with the nature of a true spiritual existence. Using rigorous, reasoned arguments and clear, concise, and often humorous prose Comte-Sponville draws on both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions to propose the atheistic alternative to religion, based on the human need to connect to each other and to the universe. In doing so, he offers a convincing treatise on a new form of spiritual life. ...Show more

Wrestling with God : The Story of My Life by Lloyd Geering

$40.00 NZD

Available Stock:
0

Category: Religion

Lloyd Geering is one of New Zealand's foremost thinkers, a man of clarity and vision who continues to present new and challenging ideas about the spiritual life of the culture he lives in. His life almost spans the twentieth century, and his stories of growing up in the Depression, cycling trips around the country, and a lively but impoverished student life all embellish the historical record of that time. Embarking on life as a newly-wed young minister, he was left suddenly bereft by his wife's death; he writes movingly of his work as a solitary young father, caring for two small children with the support of his Dunedin parishioners. Later, he became a university teacher, first at Knox College in Dunedin, then at Victoria University in Wellington. His second marriage, and the birth of a third child, brought much happiness that forms a backdrop to the public life. This became increasingly controversial as Geering wrote about his changing views of Christianity through the 1960s and 1970s. Joining radical theologicals like Bishop Robinson and John Spong, he became an innovative and challenging voice in the emerging debates about God and religion. His 1966 article 'What Does the Resurrection Mean?' (included in the autobiography) led to the famed heresy trial in 1967. Found innocent, Geering became the foundation professor of religion at Victoria University, and continued a highly successful career as an academic and writer. His first book (God in the New World, 1968) was a bestseller in both Australia and New Zealand, and five later titles have earned him acclaim in many parts of the world. Wrestling with God places personal, emotional and intellectual challenges against the backdrop of a significant academic and theological career. Lloyd Geering's re-imagining of the religious dimensions of human life required not only the brilliance that impressed his peers from the beginning, but the uncompromising intellectual honesty that later nettled lesser and more timid spirits. A deep and abiding concern for others led this former mathematics student into the ministry; a rigorouscommitment to truth has made him one of the preeminent theologians of our time. Today, Lloyd Geering writes compellingly about the spiritual life of Western culture in the early twentieth century, and the centrality of human relationship with an endangered planet. But his story follows the path also of the radical changes taking place within the post-Christian Western culture into which he was born. Perhaps of greatest significance within the changing character of Western culture has been the changing concept of God. Wrestling With God is a reflective and honest account of one man's personal journey, which is set alongside the momentous changes to Western culture and thought during the twentieth century.Publishing October 2006. ...Show more
