Part of The Matawehi Fables series, this graphic novel is a story of two hostile tribes: one thriving, the other starving and forced to enter into a hard bargain to survive. In the midst of the conflict, two lovers from opposing tribes, Kahu and Kuratawhiti, plan to bring their warring tribes together through their marriage. But tragedy looms as Kahu defends his beloved Kuratawhiti against his treasured sister, Mira, who unleashes a lifetime of rage on Kuratawhiti and her people.

Helen Pearse-Otene (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine, Taranaki, Ngāti Ruanui) is a writer and acting tutor. She graduated from Victoria University of Wellington and Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School and has performed throughout Aotearoa and overseas with Māori theatre productions, including Waiora (by Hone Kouka), Purapurawhetū (by Briar Grace-Smith) and her own play The Battalion.


Andrew Burdan is a free-lance illustrator who lives and works in Wellington, New Zealand. He has illustrated a number of childrens books including the Russell clark award finalist (2008) Te Po Roa (Huia Ltd) and the graphic novel Hautipua Rererangi (Huia ltd) - winner of the LIANZA Te Tohu Pounamu award and the Graphic Novel Ngarimu Te Tohu Toa (2010) winner of the LIANZA Te Kura Pounamu award (2011). Other books include: Stevie's first day, Cousins, Elephant Adventure , Kaila ma Leilani and Almost Five.  He has contributed illustrations regularly to the School Journal, as well as the magazine's Taiki E! and Haumi E! For Huia ltd. His Storyboarding work on films includes District 9, Aliens in the Attic, Without a Paddle , Out of the Blue and two little boys
